B.com Pass or Engg Honours ? Balance sheet or Euler-Lagrange equation ?

"Loose Tools goes to Current Assets sir. So does Patents and Copy rights" Shouted Ms. Astha of my Class when Prof. Kulkarni was teaching Accounting basics.

Creditors, Debtors, Cash Book, Ledger, Trial Balance and Balance sheets were the topic of discussion - Basics of Accounting. Its when all the engineers in our class - who have learnt Hi-Tech stuff ranging from Stress on a Beam to Compiler Design to Hi-freqency wave transmission - realised the Blunders we have committed in Life by NOT taking commerce while graduating.

For a minute, I went back to my 10+2 days. We, in 12th , learnt about Classical Mechanics. Did 500+ sums in Integration and Differentiation. We learnt what is Gravity and what satellites are. We knew how to make Phenol from Benzene. We knew that Voltage = Current * Resistance. We knew what the yellow product was when a Red Metal was treated with Hydrochloric acid. We cracked most questions of IIT-JEE too.

I was interuppted when Professor was asking a Question to us, "What is PL" ?

Having worked in IT industry for nearly 4 years, all I could think of was "Project Leader". Before I could say that (:-) , My class mate, another Engineer, shouted : "Personal Loans".

A bunch of guys, Probably the B.COM grads, Burst into Laughter. Once of them smartly raised his ass off the seat, adjusted his spectacles in a "smartie" way and said : "Sir, Its profit and Loss Account". And he looked at we engineers with a "meaningful" smile.

Finance Lecture got over. Lunch Break. Then came the Mathematics Prof. He said he'll be doing some Integration and Differentiation concepts. We, the Engineers, looked at our commerce colleagues with Contempt and affixed a Sarcastic smile on our faces which read : "Now the game starts buddy !! Count your days..."

But to our surprise and worries, the professor started his lecture with a problem :

"The demand function is given by the expression D = 2Q + 1/5Q*Q , the supply function is...Calculate Marginal Cost, Marginal Revenue...Equilibrium cost...Economic Order Quantity..blah..blah..."

Cool !! Wonderul ! Excellent ! All Greek and Latin. We knew to differentiate. But we did not know what the Marginal Revenue was all about. We Engineers were in the same dilemma as how a North Indian would feel when he is asked to differentiate between Malayalam and Tamil. Our sarcastic smiles became humble apologies. And Our Engg Honours looked much Humbler that a B.com pass.

We Engineers requested the Prof to give us a problem in Speed-Acceleration or Current-Charge to prove our "mettle". But professor replied "You are here to learn Business. Not Science."

They, B.coms, never had the pressure of entrance exams, Didnt have to shell out money in-terms of education. But had 3 full years of full fun at Places like LSR, delhi and St Xaviers-Mumbai, going to pub on every weekend and taking their GirlFriends to movies on every fridays.
They did "crediTing" and "DebiTing" - which has nothing more than Simple addition and subtraction.

We, on the other hand, slogged the entire 2 years of our 10+2 days, suffered a lot of "drought" in Engg colleges where female-male ratio is lesser than Tiger-Man ratio in India and spent lots of thousands on books, fees, In-Plant trainings and Projects. We did problems that involved Numerical methods, Binomial Theorem, probability, partial Integration and so on.

Now, after all that, we look upto B.COM grads, the same way a male-passenger waiting at Andheri station would tell himself when he sees a loosely packed first-class ladies Coach of 7.45PM Virar fast: "I should been have born in bombay as a woman !!"

Friends, Its not a real-life scene that I have depicted here. Lots of Masala is there- But I hope I have conveyed the underlying concept. Now time for your valued comments.

the hard work will show-up later! these basics can be mastered easily - mostly need to understand the jargon and apply simple math! :-)
Deep analysis that we enggs are used to is the differentiator! Mark my words.

Well.......if you are in business school......you're there to learn business. It makes no difference if you did your engg or you did commerce. And depending on what you do later, you just might have wasted time and talent doing engineering.....so....

nice post! you stopped at the classroom! There's more. Jobs! almost all require a mathematics test that has less to do with maths and more to do with economics.

Hmm,

You are doing PG and it is bound to happen whether ME,MCOM or MBA. But anything new to learn is interesting. Cheers!!!

My compliments exactly pardner !!

How much do i regret doing engg in my life. MBA wouldve been much easier if i were a Bcom or so. And without screwing up 6 years of my life aftr engg. No, it ws like i tried again for Engg entrance coz dad didnt want to spend money and send me to a self fin college.
Then got into a good engg branch but with 9 semesters, whch wth strikes n all stretched to 5 years. So totally 6 valuable years of my life! Then engg at a place with a 120:2 boy-gal ratio!!Nothing u ever did sounds like fun when u listen to the tales of these just bcom/mbas who had fun all life while we struggled with thermodynamics and integration

Moreover in the finance sector, mebbe u might hav to report to some BCOM MBA a year or so younger just coz they completed mba 2 years earlier as they fin: bcom earlier too...

Or worse some Bcom with 7-8 years of experience!!!Same age as u; lesser qualified but lording over u

What indignity !!

btw ur writing is really getting bettr n better. esp liked the booze post and the ganesha posts!!Hilarious!!
Do check out my posts too and comment ...

Arun anna,

thanks a lot for glorifying a dead degree ......... frankly B.Com sucks ..... its a five-year holiday ....... the syllabus is learnt by rote ....... no time for logic or conceptual clarity .... to feel good ask a B.Com guy why Liab / Income are credit and Asset / Exp debit ... then the real mettle is shown ... while it is true that we have covered more MBA topics than engineers ...... at the end of the day what matters is the sincerity in learning a subject ... which Com grads lack ... believe me we will get caught out by the end of Trim I .....

Chetas and Chetis,

I am a very poor and dumb BCOM guy...who would like to show you 2 different pesrpsctvs.

One is that there a lot of us who unlike all you did not have rich papas and mummys to fork over the lacs required for engineering. So even though they might be as or even more intelligent than any of you, they cannot go into engg. for financial reasons.

And there are also many of us who do a BCOM because they are interested in finance and then go on to do proff. courses like CA, CS or AICWA.

So to make a general st. that BCOMs are dumb or that doing a BCOM is a 'holiday' is offensive....just like saying that engg. degrees are always on sale..:)

regards,

Reghu

I agree with reghu ,

but also one more thing u have done engineering first of all and then u r going for a totally different field about which u have zero knowledge then how can u blame bcom students who are able to answer the questions? they have worked hard in their own field and were able to answer , either dont choose the commerce field or dont say later that "the bcom students are so lucky they dont have to work hard" , if they are not working hard then how do u think are they answering the questions thrown at them? when u are choosing a commerce field ofcourse u cannot expect being asked questions relating to engineering ? can you?

I never said that engineering is an easy course , but also I will not agree that B.com is an easy one because it all depends on how much efforts u put in ,

nothing is easy in life,

and one more thing wanted to ask dint u ever hang out?

I have many engineering friends and medical as well , and we all hang out once in while , and if u really dont then hats off to u coz u r really putting in lot of hard work i guess!

This is just my view ...no offence ,

but anyways good review and good writing

Thanx
